Growing up, I always found it tedious and even unnecessary being forced to go to church. I never liked it, I hated to have to wake up when I just wanted to sleep in and to top it all up I never even fit in with the sunday school kids.
Church became to me so routinely wired that I found it an inconvenience. I never benefitted socially (no friends) emotionally or even spiritually (noting I would sneak out during mass to play at the swings) I came to really despise going church.
However, things eventually come to change when we grow up and have to start making life changing decisions because this is where we really mess up our lives and start calling out to God. You see, when you are living under your parents or guardians, chances are high you follow the rules of the house— but when you are on your own, nobody can really tell you what to do.
The reason why I started talking about that part of my childhood is because as a child, I never really related to any church activities. It was more of a routine and I never truly understood the concept of why Jesus had to die, therefore it felt fraudulent for me to be there since I never connected with anything.
I believe this is what has happened to the church and basically the world today. We view going to church as an important and vital part of our lives but to many, that is as far as it goes.
This as well, has caused Jesus to be reduced to a religion. He has become one of the many ways to God, even some christians believe so, in fact I am guilty as well. I had written about religious beliefs at some point before I began understanding by the aid of the Holy Spirit what the sacrifice on the cross really meant.
With the truth that I hold now, I do not also judge people for their believes but seek to enlighten them because it paramount that we know what the truth really is.
This post intends therefore to discuss why Jesus is above all things. The only way to God.
I think most religions would agree that there is only one supreme and infinte God. However, every religion in the world claims to have their own way to reaching God.
Diving into each and every one of these religions we soon realize that at some point to reach to God there has to be a form of works needed. Let us review a few examples,
- Take Buddhism, you have to practice the eight noble truths and have regular meditation to one day hope to attain the state of nirvana (meaning to touch the infinite)
- Islam teaches about daily prayers and having your good deeds outweigh your bad ones.
- Hinduism teaches about reincarnation and karma, in that, you experience rebirth in the next life as a better or worse state of existence depending on what kind of life you previously lived. Also believes you can be reincarnated to animals. Salvation can be attained by either works, way of the knowledge or devotion to the way.
- Even some christian churches have been deceived to preach works as a way to God. Things like being a good person, kindness, good deeds. Don’t get me wrong these are excellent works but outside Christ they are meaningless. You may donate thousands of billions and try to love every single person on earth but without Jesus as your Lord and saviour all is vain.
I could go on with the different belief systems but all end up in works.
Now, I would like to direct you to the story of the tower of Babel. This story is actually a clear depiction of what is happening with all the religious systems in the world today. The tower of Babel was man’s attempt to reach God and if we observe what God did, He confused their languages.
Why? Why would He do that? That is interestingly odd right? Why would God not want man to reach Him?
Easy —for He is a holy God and we have fallen from His glory. We cannot touch Him with sin.
We lost that relationship when the first man on earth to ever walk with God sinned. Now, I would like to explain this even in more detail. If God confused their languages, then it means that they disintegrated and went about their own ways and eventually came up with their own cultures, beliefs and subsequently ways of trying to reach God.
There are roughly 4,000+ religions in the entire world today, all trying to reach God in their own way— I hope we are still flowing. And with all these religions each of them has their own way to reach to God and as we have broken some of these ways down, we realize they all end by working your own way to salvation.
Then comes Jesus Christ
So let us interoggate Jesus.
The Way, Jesus claimed to be the only way to God. How can this be? Before we even dive into the Bible verses, let us try logic. We have seen that men have attempted to reach God and failed miserably. In fact, they are almost at 5,000 times of repeated failure. So what is the problem? Doesn’t God want us to know Him? Doesn’t He desire we reach Him and to know Him?
Easy—He does, but not on our terms only on His terms.
God is not a God of confusion, I believe we would all agree here. And because He loves us infinitely and desires us to reach to Him, He reaches out to us on His terms. Notice—He initiates the reconciliation process because an infinite being can touch a finite being but a finite being cannot touch an infinite being in his sin. Hence,
We cannot touch God as fallen men, but through Jesus we have direct access to Him. That’s is why Jesus said, I am the way, the truth and the life, no one can come to the Father except by me. (John 14:6) thereby making all other attempts to reach God void. However, I believe there are many ways to Jesus because people encounter Christ differently as He reveals Himself to those that believe in Him in many ways.
The Truth, Now this is where most people get mixed up because there has been a great misconception and misinterpretation with this statement “I am the truth” Most people believe by Him saying that he was the truth He actually meant ‘His actions were the truth‘ but not so.
If we believe that truth is absolute, then there cannot be two truths. Everyone in the world is therefore asking, “what is the truth?” Even the courts of law where men seek justice, want truth, fairness and justice to prevail. Pilate too, asked Jesus, what is the truth?
John18:37 Pilate therefore said unto him, Art thou a king then? Jesus answered, Thou sayest that I am a king. To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice.
John 18:38 Pilate saith unto him, What is truth? And when he had said this, he went out again unto the Jews, and saith unto them, I find in him no fault at all.
Now in front of him is a man who claimed to be the embodiment of truth. He is truth, note — he did not say my words are the truth. He said, I am the truth.
So let us replace the word truth with Jesus, not in scripture but just for understanding this point. And ye shall know Jesus, and Jesus shall make you free.
Every single man under the sun is a slave. A slave to sin, we are all bound to sin and struggle with fleshly desires.
But God initiates reconciliation through His son Jesus Christ, that those who believe in Him should not perish but have eternal life. Because the wages/payment of sin is death but the gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus~Romans 6:23
The life, Jesus also claimed to be the life. So let us break this down. What does it mean to have life?
To actually be/exist
Now let us go back to the Genesis of all things because there are many who claim that Jesus never existed until His birth about 2,000 years ago.
He existed in Genesis 1:1 “In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.”
So if Jesus is the life, and in Him all things come to life, then doesn’t Genesis 1:1 say He created all things?…Okay, let us go a bit further be skeptical because maybe some of you are saying “it doesn’t say Jesus created heaven and the earth but God.”
Let’s us go with God. Who created the heaven and the earth? God. What created the heavens and the earths? The word of God.
John 1:14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.
Jesus told the Pharisees, before Abraham was, I AM.
He brought life into all things, he healed, restored and resurrected the dead. That’s is why He is the life.
John 1:3 All things were made by Him; and without Him was not any thing made that was made.
John 1:4 In Him was life; and the life was the light of men.
We have looked into all Jesus’ claims—I am the way, the truth and the life. Now we are left with a conclusion to make.
Was Jesus a mad man or was He exactly who He claimed to be?
This point here is where the rubber meets the road for most people. Because if He spoke the truth, then all humanity MUST come through Him to get to God but if did not speak the truth then we make Him out to be a liar. And if He is a liar then we still have no truth, no life and no way to God, meaning we are in actual sense dead beings because after death there is no hope.
This is the harsh reality of the world today and that is why many people do not accept Christ or pretend to accept Christ but deep down they know they are living in falsehood. Jesus shows us a reflection of the true nature of man.
He says to me, “you are a sinner Agnes and unless you come to Me you will die in your sin, in Me there is a change of heart, the Holy Spirit power to give your life in abundance, to help you overcome the world and its desires, but for you to be my disciple, you must deny yourself and follow me.” For those who die in Christ, He has the power to resurrect and give eternal life.
Now, imagine all people in false religions, false Christianity, false ways and believing false truths. Those are souls that Jesus desires to save, because He bore the sins of all men, the sins of the whole world. He died for all men regardless of tribe, nation or race.
God’s terms were, I will meet all humanity at the cross
Jesus’ sacrifice was final; but some do not want to be saved, many prefer their soothing lies more than truth. They prefer having religious pride more than truth, they prefer the comfort of their sin more than the truth.
The scriptures say,
Hebrews 10:29 How much more severely do you think someone deserves to be punished who has trampled the Son of God underfoot, who has treated as an unholy thing the blood of the covenant that sanctified them, and who has insulted the Spirit of grace?
By not accepting salvation through the finished work of the cross and dedicating your whole life to Jesus as Lord and saviour means that you are counting on something else other than Him to save you.
Isaiah 64:6~ But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.
Therefore, when God judges the world on that judgement day, all the sins one has ever committed and never placed upon the account of Christ, one will have to account for. For He is God of justice and must judge all sin.
But the amazing thing is that, we can call upon on Him now while He is near and He will wash us clean and give us a new heart. Jesus said,
John 6:37 All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out.
Believe it or not, the reason for all humanity’s existence is to know God and do the will of God. And He has made that possible through Jesus Christ. We only have to turn to Jesus and He will do a work in us that only the Holy Spirit can accomplish. He is the only one who can give you a new heart, a purposeful and fulfilled life, identity and hope. No works needed but a truly repentant heart and a total dependency and surrender to Jesus.
Jesus Christ is the King of kings and Lord of lords.
